Featured Article Who are Peer Advisors?
March 17, 2006
Peer Advisors are Cal
students trained and employed by the Career Center to assist other students
with issues ranging from simple resume reviews to more complex dilemmas
such as professional vs. grad school, or internship vs. study abroad.
Before they begin to meet with students, Peer Advisors receive
extensive training from Career Center counselors on proper resume/cover
letter writing, interviewing, job/internship search strategies,
and more. Peers also learn the ins and outs of the graduate or professional
school application process and how to go about preparing yourself
academically for the process. They often can provide insights
and advice based on their own experience as an applicant.
In addition, these individuals offer one-of-a-kind advice because as student leaders, the Peers utilize the very services they promote. Anthony Harbour, for example, has been a Peer Advisor for 3 years and worked as a film publicist for Allied McDonald marketing firm in San Francisco, an executive assistant at Ruder Finn Public Relations firm in New York City, and most recently, participated in the UCDC program where he worked as an investigator for the Public Defenders Service of Washington, DC. He will spend Fall 2006 in Ghana as a participant in the Education Abroad Program (EAP). Anthony is just one of our Peers who has much to offer. What Do Peer Advisors Do and Where Do They Do It? Weekdays, Peers can be found on duty in our 2nd floor Info Lab between the hours of 1:00 and 4:00pm. You can email the Peers to schedule a one-on-one meeting with a Peer. Peer Advisors can help you achieve peace of mind by demystifying the LSAT, fine-tuning a summer job resume, or reassuring the over-achiever in us all. Peer Advisors do not just serve students from the Career Center! Additionally, Peers are on campus in the MLK Student Union during Career Fairs sponsored by the Career Center. Finally, student organizations - whether residence hall, Greek, service, or professional-based - can request a personalized workshop conducted by one of our Peers on the topic of their choice. Why Meet the Peers? Peer Advisors are your student ambassadors to the Career Center. As full-time undergraduates, they share the same concerns as you do about juggling work, career dilemmas, next week's midterm, or what comes next. Because of their training across the range of services provided by the Career Center, our Peers can advise you on the proper steps needed to land that dream position with that acclaimed consulting firm. At the end of the day, a triumph for a fellow student is also a success for the Peer Advisor who advised him, "Don't worry -- your experience in retail is just what the consulting firm needs."
