On-Campus Recruiting (OCR) General Questions

Is there a cost for employers to participate in On-Campus Recruiting (OCR)?

There are no fees charged for this employer service.

What's the difference between CalJobs and OCR?

CalJobs, part of our password protected Callisto site, is where you can enter full-time positions, both entry level and experienced, as well as part-time jobs and internships. Jobs on CalJobs are accessible by all current students and alumni users.

On-Campus Recruiting (OCR) is a program where representatives from your organization visit the campus to recruit specifically for entry level positions and paid summer internships. Although OCR is part of the CalJobs system, you can only list OCR jobs if you have scheduled an interview date on campus.

How do students find out about interview opportunities?

Once visit details are finalized, you will post the job descriptions and screening criteria on CalJobs. Students and alumni must register for the program in order to view your jobs and submit resumes. They can search by various criteria, including company name, job location, industry, job function, and visit date range.

What's the difference between a "preselect" and "open" schedule?

On a preselect schedule, you get to view resumes in advance and choose which students to interview. On an open schedule, students sign up directly for an interview. You still have access to the resumes, but do not get to choose candidates. In both cases, however, students must meet your specific interview requirements: degree level, major, work authorization, and graduation date.

Students have contacted me because they do not see my OCR positions advertised on CalJobs. Why not?

Have you completed the process to make your jobs go live? You must enter/attach the OCR jobs to your interview schedules. If you have done these steps but are still receiving student inquiries, please contact the Employer Relations & Recruiting Office at (510) 642-0464 or by email for assistance.

How are the various deadlines for the "resume drops," pre-selection and student sign-ups decided?

At the start of the semester, we determine general guidelines for advertising positions and scheduling resume drops, preselection due dates, and student sign-ups.

These general guidelines can be tailored to meet your needs. For example, we can extend your resume drop deadline to coincide with an information session, career fair, or other campus event.

At least 45 days before your campus date(s) Enter jobs.
45 days before your campus date(s) Student resume submission period begins.
22 days before your campus date(s) Resume submission period ends and your selection process begins.
15 days before your campus date(s) Your selection process ends.
13 daysbefore your campus date(s) Preselect interview sign-up period begins.
7 days before your campus date(s) Alternate interview sign-up period begins.
4 days before your campus date(s) Sign-up period ends and schedule closes on-line.

How do I find out what my specific deadlines are?

To view your deadlines, select "On-Campus Recruiting (OCR)" from your CalJobs home page. Click on a schedule date in the date column, and you'll see your OCR dates on the next page. If you wish to customize these dates to coincide with your other campus activity, e.g. your information session or a career fair, contact the Employer Relations & Recruiting Office at (510) 642-0464 or by email.

What criteria are used to screen students during the resume submission period?

Major, degree level, graduation date range, and work authorization are the current screening criteria. Only if a student meets your stated interview requirements, will (s)he be allowed to submit a resume. Therefore, it is important that you include accurate and explicit details in your job description and match those to your screening criteria. To ensure a diverse applicant pool, we encourage you to include comparable majors to such highly competitive disciplines as Business and Computer Science.

Can I list GPA, too?

We will not screen for GPA, given the wide variance of reporting formats and interpretations. However, this information may be included in your job qualifications as a point of information for potential candidates. We encourage students to consider this before applying.

Where do we park when we come to campus?

Refer to the Parking recommendations for employers.

Entering OCR Jobs and Attaching Jobs to Interview Schedules

What's the difference between a "UC Berkeley Only Job Posting" and an "On-Campus Recruiting Job Listing"?

A UCB job will go live on the general CalJobs website, accessible by all student and alumni users. An OCR job is specific to your campus visit.

Can I request that users also apply for OCR jobs via my corporate website?

Yes. OCR users must submit via CalJobs, but you can also include additional application instructions, e.g. edit in a hyperlink to your corporate website, in the job description. Towards the bottom of the page you'll see a "Requested Document Notes" box where you can include this information.

Can I set minimum criteria on the "Interview Requirements" page?

No. Students will only be able to submit a resume if they meet each specific requirement you determine. For example, if you are recruiting for Bachelor's as well as Master's candidates, or US Citizens and Permanent Residents, you must select both options.

How do I know which majors to select?

Since these are specific, not minimum, requirements, be as inclusive as possible. We suggest that you leave this field blank if you are willing to review resumes from all majors. We use a preselect system which allows you the capability to screen out less qualified candidates.

Review our list of comparable majors to find out what majors you should select for Business, Computer Science, Engineering, etc.

Can I edit my OCR job description and/or screening criteria once I've attached the job?

Yes. Select "On-Campus Recruiting (OCR)" from your CalJobs home page. On the next page, click on the job title for the appropriate schedule to edit the description and screening criteria.

Selecting Students for Interviews

How many candidates should I select to fill my schedule(s)?

The number of interview schedules and length of interviews (30, 45 or 60 min.) determine the number of candidates that you should select. There are 13 slots on a standard 30 min. schedule, 9 slots on a 45 min. schedule, and 7 slots on a 60 min. schedule.

Should I also choose alternates? If so, how many?

We recommend selecting 3-5 alternates for each schedule if the candidate pool warrants it. Alternates can begin checking the schedule for openings on the Alternate sign-up date, usually 3 days before the schedule closes. They can also call the Recruiting Office up until the interview day to check for cancellations.

Now that I've made my selections, I need to change my schedule set-up (e.g., schedule start/end times, # of schedules, # of appointments, etc.). What I should I do?

Please contact the Employer Relations & Recruiting office immediately at (510) 642-0464 or by email before entering your preselection choices.

When and how do I notify you of my preselections?

On or before your preselection due date (11:59pm Pacific Time) as listed in your email notice, access your OCR account and follow the instructions for entering your candidate list. Be sure to identify your selections on the appropriate screen and choose only as many primary candidates as you have interview slots. Extra candidates should be entered as alternates. Once selected, please email both preselect and alternate candidates to sign up for interviews.

My preselection deadline has passed, and I now need to make changes to my original candidate list. What should I do?

At this stage you will need to contact the Employer Relations & Recruiting Office at (510) 642-0464 or by email for assistance.

I’ve met some great candidates at another event on campus. Can I interview them if they did not participate in my resume drop?

Yes, if they are current UC Berkeley students or alumni who have registered for the OCR program, you can add them to your preselect list. If they have not registered, refer them to the Career Center to do so ASAP.
