Who can use CalJobs?

Only UC Berkeley students have access (1) when registered for the current academic semester or (2) when "designated" as continuing for the upcoming semester with fees paid.

All UC alumni may subscribe to our Alumni Advantage program which includes access to CalJobs.

Registration

How do I use CalJobs? What will I be able to do?

You must first register via CalJobs in order to search and apply for jobs online. To get started, go to the login page and enter your SID or CCID as your username and password. After you complete and submit your profile, you will receive confirmation via email that your registration has been received. Using the username and password provided in that confirmation email, you will now be able to log in, search and apply for job listings, and upload documents: - up to 10 total, including resumes, cover letters, transcripts, and other related materials such as writing samples, class schedules, and letters of recommendation.

What if I'm having a problem logging in?

If you are receiving an “Incorrect username and password’ message when you try to log in to CalJobs, make sure that you are using the correct username and password. Your username is your Berkeley Student ID or CCID issued by the Career Center.

If you still cannot access CalJobs, the most frequent reasons for this are: (1) you are no longer a currently registered UC Berkeley student, or (2) your Alumni Advantage subscription has expired or never been purchased. Refer to the information below based upon your status:

  • Currently Registered Student: If you are a registered student for the current semester, verify that your Student ID is listed with the Office of the Registrar. If it isn't, contact the Registrar's office to find out why and correct the problem. Then send an email to regain access to CalJobs.
  • Alumni: See the Alumni section of this website for information about purchasing an Alumni Advantage membership which includes CalJobs access. If you already purchased Alumni Advantage, please wait 1-2 business days for your CCID to be recognized. If you are still having problems, send an email briefly describing your situation.
  • Newly Admitted Student: If you are a newly admitted student and have received your Student ID but are not able to log in, email, fax, or deliver proof that you will be attending UC Berkeley. We will accept a copy of your class schedule (phase 1 or phase 2), a receipt for paid registration fees, or a copy of your acceptance letter. Please be sure to include your full name and Student ID number when you submit any of these documents. They can be faxed to (510) 642-4958. You can scan the documents, or copy and paste if already in electronic format, and email to cclogin@berkeley.edu. You must pay your fees to request CalJobs access before your first academic term of enrollment.
  • Special Status: If you are not currently registered, you may still be eligible for Career Center services including CalJobs by using our Degree Verification option.
  • If none of the above applies to you, send an email and we'll research the problem.

I'm having trouble accessing CalJobs using my Mac. What could be the problem?

On the Macintosh, we currently support the following browser versions:

Safari 1.3.2 or higher
Firefox 1.5 or higher

Safari 1.0.3, Internet Explorer, and Opera are not supported.

Please note that Apple does not provide Safari updates past 1.0.3 unless users upgrade to Mac OS 10.3 or 10.4 (not a free upgrade). For users of Mac OS 10.2 or lower, Firefox is the only option.

On a similar note, users of Mac OS 10.2 or lower may believe they are using the "current" version of Safari, because Apple Software Update does not report current versions which are unavailable to them.

Recently I created my new CalJobs account, but I've forgotten my CalJobs password.

Go to the login page and click on the "Forgot my password" tab to receive a new password. It will be emailed to you at the email address you used in your new CalJobs profile.

How do I change my CalJobs password to one of my choice after I’ve logged in?

From the CalJobs home page, select the “My Profile” tab and then “Change Password.”

How do I log out securely?

Always click on "Logout" in the top right just below the navigation bar when you are finished. If possible, also close your browser when you log out.

Documents

What file types does CalJobs support?

CalJobs supports all standard application file types for resumes, cover letters, and other documents. Once uploaded, the original file type is converted to PDF in real-time (unless it’s already in PDF). The maximum file size is 200Kb.

How many documents can I store in the system?

CalJobs allows you to add a maximum of 10 different application documents to the system, including resumes, cover letters, transcripts, and other documents. Select the "My Documents" tab to upload your documents.

Should I submit a customized resume for each job I apply to?

No. You should not create a separate resume for each job you apply to, but rather, you may want to designate a resume for different types of jobs or industries. For example, one for SW Engineering and one for HW Engineering; or one for Finance and one for Consulting.

If CalJobs only allows me to store up to 10 documents, what happens if I need more than that?

Once you submit a document for a job through CalJobs, it stays in the employer's electronic mailbox. So, if you’ve reached your storage maximum of 10 and still need to upload a new document, simply delete one and upload the new document.

Can I update or remove a document once I've submitted it for a particular job?

  • If you need to change/update an existing document, go to "My Documents," select the document title, and upload the latest version. Then, resubmit your updated application materials for the position before the application deadline.
  • If you have submitted the wrong document(s), e.g., wrong cover letter, return to your application record and withdraw your application, but only if the submission deadline has not passed. Upload the correct document, and then resubmit your updated application materials for the position before the application deadline.

Searching for Jobs

How many jobs are available through CalJobs?

Currently, Berkeley 's CalJobs has well over 4000 jobs listed on any day. Over 3000 of these are full-time jobs with the remaining being student positions (internships, part-time, summer, and project). New jobs are added every day.

How long are jobs listed on CalJobs? How frequently are jobs posted?

Employers determine how long their jobs are posted. You can see when a job was posted and how long it will remain on CalJobs. From the "Search Results" page, click on the job title to view the job details. At the top of the listing details, look at the date for the job to go offline. Apply ASAP since the employer can change the ending date at any time. New jobs are continually uploaded to the system.

How do I search for the most recent jobs?

Jobs appear by posting date – most recent first. Select the “Jobs, Internships & OCR Interviews” tab from your student home page. Enter any applicable job search filters before performing your search. Consider creating a search agent to be notified via email about jobs that meet your search criteria.

Are full-time listings available through CalJobs?

CalJobs provides full-time listings for currently registered students and Alumni Advantage members. We serve all students except for Boalt Law School students and Haas MBAs.

Are there part-time, summer jobs, internships, and campus jobs on CalJobs?

These positions are also listed on CalJobs, and you can search by each of these position types. Also check the Work-Study site if you receive financial aid and are eligible for that option.

How do I search for campus jobs?

For student campus jobs you must be a currently registered UC Berkeley student. When searching jobs, select the position type titled "Campus Job" in the "Position Type" category. You can also enter a keyword(s) in the keyword field, such as UC Berkeley, UCB, or a department name. If you are looking for work study jobs, contact the Work Study office.

Are the On-Campus Recruiting (OCR) jobs visible in the search?

Yes. To search for OCR jobs, select the "All OCR Interviews" position type on the "Jobs, Internships & OCR Interviews" search page. When viewing actual position information, OCR jobs will also have a yellow OCR status bar displaying at the top.

Why don't I get any jobs when I search?

For more job results, try choosing fewer criteria in your search selections. If you get too many results, you can add more search criteria next time around.

Other search suggestions:

  • Work Type - Select only one work type choice in your search. Consider keywords too.
  • Keywords - Keywords are taken from all fields within the job posting. Keyword searches are most effective when you use as few letters from each word as possible, but you must add an * after the word. Examples: bio* would turn up bio, biology, biomedical, etc. If you are not certain of an employer name, for example, use % before the known part of the name. Example: %Youth Services to find Tricounty Youth Services.
  • Remember to clear your selections before beginning another search.

There are hardly any jobs in my field. What can I do?

Keep trying! New jobs are posted daily. Create a search agent to be notifed when jobs that match your search critereria are posted. Job listings for new grads increase in late Spring. Summer positions start to appear in September and increase in Spring Semester. Be sure that you don't restrict your search too much (see Why don't I get any jobs when I search?). Job hunters should know how and where to apply directly to employers who may not advertise all openings. Consult with a Career Center Counselor for assistance in developing your job search. Also try our additional Job Listing Sites.

Features

What is a search agent?

A search agent is an advanced search option that you set up in CalJobs and schedule to notify you when jobs are entered into the system that meet the criteria that interest you most. This is an easy way for you to stay on top of your job search!

How do I create, edit or delete a search agent?

Select "Jobs, Internships & OCR Interviews" from your CalJobs menu, then select the Advanced Search tab. To create a new search agent, first select the criteria for the search agent, add a title into the “Save As” field, and click the check box to save it. All search agents will be saved in the Search Agents tab (next to Advanced Search). To schedule the search to run and email the job list to you automatically, click the [schedule] button in the Options column. The [edit] and [delete] functions are also located under the Options column.

What is the "My Applications" tab?

This is an easy way to track your application for non-OCR positions using the internal application process available through CalJobs. If you submitted your resume via links under “Application Status,” you will be able to track this application activity. You will see the position title, employer name, and date/time submitted, in addition to a [Withdraw Application] button. You can sort your applications by position or date submitted.

I can't find a job I applied for in "My Applications." What do I do?

Only non-OCR applications that you have submitted via CalJobs will appear here (i.e., if you emailed your resume directly to the employer, you won't see it in your application history). To doublecheck the application process, search for the job posting again and review the Application Status section on the right.

To view your OCR submissions, select the "My OCR Interview" tab.

What is the "Employers" tab?

This is an easy way to find out more information about active employers. Since employers provide this information to CalJobs, some may choose to complete their company profiles with more detail than others.

What is the "Calendar" tab?

You can track key system dates and deadlines that apply to you as well as add personal events or reminders to this calendar. New for 2007-2008, individual Employer Information Sessions will also be listed here. Check the Calendar regularly for session details.
