Peer Advisors Profiles - 2008-2009

Amy Li
Hello everyone! My name is Amy and I’m a third year Psychology/Integrative Biology double major. I’m one of your new Peer Advisors and I am so excited to be a part of the Career Center team! After graduating from Cal, I plan on hopefully going to medical school and becoming either a pediatrician, obstetrician, or a neo-natal surgeon (still can’t make up my mind—just know I love working with children!). Aside from being a peer-advisor at the Career Center, I’m also an advisor for a club on campus called Medical Cluster, where I help advise students who are pre-med or considering going on the pre-med track here at Cal. In addition to advising, I volunteer at the Urgent Care department at the Tang Center and I will be doing some research at UCSF this coming fall. When I have free time, I like to eat out at restaurants, hang out with friends, shop, watch movies, do gymnastics, and sleep. I’m here to help, so feel free to ask anything that you’re curious or concerned about, and I will try my best to answer your questions or at least direct you to a resource that can further assist you. Hope to see you drop by soon and I can’t wait to meet all of you!

Erica McClanahan
Hey Everyone. My name is Erica McClanahan and I am a 4th year here at Cal. My major is American Studies with an emphasis in Race, Ethnicity, and Health in America. This past summer I interned at Community Clinic Consortium through the Health Careers Connection Program. There I was exposed to importance of Community Health Centers, Health education, and health advocacy and policy. My interest lies in Public Health and social justice and I plan to eventually pursue a masters degree in Public Health. I am graduating in May and plan to study abroad in Chile to learn spanish the following fall semester. Then I plan to attend Americorps to hopefully develop my skills and gain exposure in the public health arena. I have a lot of experience here at Cal, so I definitely can offer you any advice I can give. This is my fourth year here at the Career Center so I look forward to being able to serve you in the best way possible. Please come visit me at the Career Center during info lab hours. See you soon!

Kimeshia Thomas
Hey everyone!!! My name is Kimeshia Thomas, and I’m one of the returning Career Center Peer Advisors. I’m a fourth year Interdisciplinary Studies Field major with a concentration in Social control through persuasion, influence, and propaganda (I know it’s a mouthful!!!), as well as being Pre-med. This year I’m really looking forward to getting involved in new and diverse activities on campus. Above all I’m just really excited about working for the Career Center! A few things about me…well, first and foremost, I love to sleep! I know, I know, a little strange, but if you ask anyone who knows me well they can testify to this fact. Also I love lots of different types of music, dancing, and hanging out with my friends and family. I love to talk, I guess you could say I like to hear my own voice, but I’m still a good listener too. So if you ever want to talk to me or learn more about our resources, please feel free to stop by! Also I like to laugh and eat chocolate (I know random), but that’s who I am in a nutshell. I’m really looking forward to this upcoming year, and I hope that I can provide you with support and new information.

Lisa Fojo
Well hello there to everyone checking out my bio! My name is Lisa Fojo and I am finally in my last year here at Cal after transferring from Las Positas College in Livermore. I am majoring in Psychology in hopes of someday becoming a school counselor. I am new to the Career Center Peer Advising team and really excited and looking forward to meeting everyone. I really enjoy advising and talking with my peers about any concerns or questions they may have. I’m also currently a peer advisor for the Psychology Undergraduate Department. Sometimes life at Cal can get stressful and I have noticed from past experiences that coming to speak with a Peer Advisor can be really helpful to reduce that anxiety. Take a deep breath and get ready for another year; you are almost done!

Mariel Lisud
Hey everybody! My name is Mariel Lisud, and I'm a 4th year Business Administration major and first-time Peer Advisor. I transferred from Pasadena City College in 2007 and now I'm trying to maximize my Cal experience; that includes becoming a mentor for the Young Entrepreneurs at Haas, leading teams for the Undergraduate Marketing Association, watching the Cal football team, and of course, using the Career Center for advice on everything from career choices to life goals. I love to watch television, read, cook, play online crossword puzzles, visit my family in SoCal, and sing at random (who doesn't?). This past summer I've interned with Enterprise Rent-a-Car as a Summer Management Trainee and also as a Marketing Intern for Six Plans, Inc. While I am still exploring my career path, I have a very keen interest in management, marketing, and consulting. What's great about becoming a Peer Advisor is that I'll better understand my professional interests in the process of helping my peers identify their own. Once I figure all that out, I can go on to pursuing my bucket list, which includes flying the maddest Jaguar convertible on the German Autobahn, having dinner with Warren Buffett, singing along with Hugh Laurie, and jet-skiing in my own beach in the Philippines. Anyway, I hope to see you guys at the Career Center, and let's start talking about the careers that willl help you achieve your own lifelong dreams!

Mary Chesus
Hi everyone! My name is Mary Chesus and I'm a second year student from Santa Cruz, CA. I'm an intended Economics major focusing on two pathways: Accounting/Finance and International Development. I am an Alumni Scholar, and enjoy being part of their clubs. I have traveled abroad on scholarships with the U.S. Department of State twice, first to Egypt and most recently to Tunisia. I also have experience working as an accounting assistant. I love traveling, cooking, jazz, and everything about Cal. If you have any questions about studying abroad, US government jobs, careers in the financial world, resumes, or just want to stop by to talk about travel, feel free to come see me at the Career Center!

Rena Sepulveda
Hello Everyone! My name is Rena Sepulveda and I am a third year Political Science and Sociology double major. I am originally from Ventura County in Southern California. Here at Cal I am involved in various organizations such as UC Rally Committee, Students Organizing for Justice in the Americas (SOJA), the Gender and Equity Center, a Coordination board for the ASUC, the Undergraduate Political Science Association, and the Berkeley Undergraduate Sociology Association. Previously, I worked at a non-profit affordable community developer called Cabrillo Economic Development. I enjoy spending time with friends and family, writing poetry (especially spoken word), dancing, spending time in the sun, and adventuring in the wilderness. I am devoted to political activism and creating positive change in my community and surrounding ones. I have a passion for educating and helping people. I am extremely excited to work as a Peer Advisor at the Career Center, which will enable me to educate and help others, while providing students with beneficial tools and skills in accordance to jobs and internships. I can’t wait to help all of you, so come by soon!

Shirley Lau
Hello Everyone! My name is Shirley and I am a third year Psychology major. I am very excited to be a part of the Peer Advisor team and to assist you along your career exploration and planning here at Cal! I was born in Hong Kong and moved to the States around 8 years ago. I attended school in the Bay Area for two years and moved to Sacramento for high school. I have worked in the School of Social Welfare admissions office and the Energy and Resources Group during the past two years. I am part of the Society of Hong Kong and Chinese Affairs, and have also participated in other organizations such as the Berkeley Legal Studies Association and the Associated Students of Psychology. I plan to go to law school after I graduate from Cal, with a strong interest in International Business Law or Corporate Law. I am very friendly and love to explore different career options. So please come into the Career Center if you have any questions or just want to chat. I will be there to help you with your career exploration or other concerns to the best of my abilities!

Yanni Wu
Hey everyone! My name is Yanni and I am currently a 3rd year student here at Cal! I am working on an Integrative Biology major as well as a Music minor, and I am pursuing my dream of working as a physician in a county hospital. During the past two years here, I have had an intense connection with the music department, as I have taken various music classes and become deeply involved with the world-famous Javanese Gamelan under the guidance of the renowned Master Midiyanto. I have also worked as a middle-school tutor for Bears United In Literacy Development (that’s BUILD for short) under Cal Corps Public Service Center, and as a research assistant at the UCSF Psychiatry Department. I have also been involved with Project S.M.I.L.E (Who’s GOT Style?), the largest student-run mentoring program here at Cal! When I have time, I like to work out at the gym, go for a swim in our wonderful Spiecker Pool, or just grab a book while tapping my toes to the background music. I look forward to finding that summer volunteer abroad program that I have always dreamed of, and I hope to join the Peace Corps sometime in the future. I am friendly and very easily-amused (I don’t know why, but I think everything is funny, really). Moreover, I am always in search of some delightfully luscious vegetarian dishes, and I think Odwalla’s “Superfood” is like heaven-stored-in-a-bottle! Did I mention that I also love meeting new people? So please come by for a chat, and I can guarantee that we’ll share a laugh!
